A few words on the 2006 Vintage

There is an awful lot of talk about 2006 at the moment. Comparisons abound, opinions differ and everyone has a view. My own is that 2006 is a jolly good vintage. It has produced enjoyable, approachable wines that will bring great pleasure to wine lovers.

Equally, 2006 is a vintage that perfectly illustrates the technical progress winegrowers have made over the past few years in producing really good wine, in spite of the vagaries of Bordeaux’s coastal climate. This is particularly true in September when, even if we do not have perfect weather, we are now capable of harvesting healthy grapes and successfully turning them into beautiful wines.

At Château Peyrabon, for example, as at top châteaux all over the region, the latest techniques and methods were used to:

Air the vine plants and expose the bunches to the maximum amount of light, to produce aromatic, deeply coloured grapes with soft tannins
Drain the soils, and make sure the vine plant roots were not excessively wet, which would have led to diluted, watery grapes
Pick at exactly the right time by testing the maturity levels of the grapes on a daily basis
Only use ripe, healthy grapes by draconian selection of individual berries in the vineyard and on arrival at the winery
Vinify the grapes from each plot separately, so that by adapting vinification to suit different batches we were able to maintain typicity and character.

Thanks to these measures and the skill of our viticulturalists and winemakers, we are proud to present our very promising 2006 wines, made from a balanced blend of classic Médoc grape: elegant, very fresh, fruity and balanced, with round tannins and a long, powerful finish
